Vernon Selects Former Firefighter to Fill
Malburg’s Unexpired Seat

EGP News

The Vernon city council picked a former firefighter and high school coach on Monday to finish up the term of a longtime mayor and councilman who retired after serving over fifty years.

Daniel D. Newmire, a two-year Vernon resident whose grandfather grew up in neighboring Huntington Park, will take over the term of Leonis Malburg, which ends in April 2012.

Following careers as a fire captain in Arizona and a coach at several Southern California high schools, the 61-year old Newmire now runs Speed Expertise, a speed and agility school that is frequented by athletes from southeast cities including Maywood, South Gate, Huntington Park and Bell.

Mayor Hilario Gonzales says the new councilman, with his roots in the Southeast neighborhoods, also has an understanding of Vernon as a place where many residents of those neighborhoods go to work.

“It is an exciting time for the City as it continues to find creative ways to support the businesses within its borders, and develops new programs to assist its neighboring communities, which provide many of the approximately 50,000 workers employed in Vernon.”
