Administration
The police department is headed by Chief Steve Towles who has brought
about significant and progressive changes to the department. Chief
Towles has dedicated himself to provide the community with the
most highly trained and well-equipped police force available. The
chief recognizes the importance of providing professional law enforcement
services to the community. Not only did the changes have a significantly
impact on crime, but they also allowed the department to provide
the community with the most effective and efficient police services
available. The chief has dedicated his career to continually look
for new ways to enhance the way Vernon provides police services
to the community.
An example of the improvement is the increased use of technology
to provide outstanding law enforcement services. The City of Vernon
has devoted substantial resources to acquire state-of-the-art mobile
computers, a wireless network, powerful software as well as thermal
and night vision imaging devices. The police communication center
is a model for other agencies.
Chief Towles relies on his administrative staff to manage the daily
operation of the department. Captain James Rodino is the Patrol
Commander and Lieutenant Danny Calleros is the Services Commander.
Captain Rodino is responsible for the uniform patrol division and
the Detective Bureau. Captain Rodino also oversees the Community
Oriented Policing program. As Services commander, Lieutenant Calleros
is responsible for the Industrial Relations Division, recruitment,
training, the Records Bureau and Internal Affairs and the Communications
Center. He is also in charge of all police technology projects.
By dividing the operations of the department between the patrol
and services commanders, Chief Towles is assured that the goals
of the City of Vernon of providing excellent policing services to
the business community and to those who work in Vernon is achieved.
