Public Works Division

The Public Works Division is responsible for maintaining the City of Vernon's infrastructure, city buildings, warehouse, and vehicle fleet. The City of Vernon was founded in 1905 as an industrial community and developed with an infrastructure to meet those needs. However, with new technologies entering the work place and transportation modes shifting, enhancements are necessary. The division employs approximately 60 persons.

The Engineering Section is responsible for the design of public improvements and contract administration. Public improvements include roadways, storm drains, sewers, traffic signals, and city owned buildings. This section maintains records and plans for past improvements, traffic counts, accident history, and sign inventories. Additionally it provides survey services for City construction projects and prepares and reviews legal descriptions for street dedications.

The public works' crews maintain City trees, provide graffiti removal, repair concrete and asphalt surfaces, maintain and clean the City's sewer and storm drain systems. Additionally, City staff provides maintenance and cleans City buildings. The City garage maintains a fleet of 300 vehicles and pieces of equipment and warehouses stocks and supplies.

City contractors provide signal maintenance, traffic lane striping, and street sweeping services.

The Survey Section provides construction engineering and inspection, as well as maintains the City's centerline ties, City monuments, and benchmarks. All private property lines are established from these record monuments.

Additionally the Public Works Division, in cooperation with the Planning and Building Divisions review and process all parcel maps, lot line adjustments, lot mergers, covenants, and agreements.

Finally, the Public Works Division reviews, approves, and inspects all construction within the public right-of-way that is required as part of a new development.
