
The police department is headed by Interim Chief Calleros who has brought about significant and progressive changes to the department. Interim Chief Calleros has dedicated himself to provide the community with the most highly trained and well-equipped police force available. The interim chief recognizes the importance of providing professional law enforcement services to the community. Not only did the changes have a significantly impact on crime, but they also allowed the department to provide the community with the most effective and efficient police services available. The interim chief has dedicated his career to continually look for new ways to enhance the way Vernon provides police services to the community.

An example of the improvement is the increased use of technology to provide outstanding law enforcement services. The City of Vernon has devoted substantial resources to acquire state-of-the-art mobile computers, a wireless network, powerful software as well as thermal and night vision imaging devices. The police communication center is a model for other agencies.
Interim Chief Calleros relies on his administrative staff to manage the daily operation of the department. Captain James Rodino is the Patrol Commander and a lieutenant handles the Services Commander responsibilities. Captain Rodino is responsible for the uniform patrol division and the Detective Bureau. Captain Rodino also oversees the Community Oriented Policing program and police technology projects. The Services Commander, is responsible for the Professional Standards Division, recruitment, training, the Records Bureau and Internal Affairs and the Communications Center.
By dividing the operations of the department between the patrol and services commanders, Interim Chief Calleros is assured that the goals of the City of Vernon of providing excellent policing services to the business community and to those who work in Vernon is achieved.
