The Public Works Division is responsible for maintaining the city’s infrastructure, which includes the roadway, sewer and storm drain systems. The Public Works Division’s responsibilities include:

The Building Division ensures that all structures in Vernon are in compliance with city and state building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and fire codes. The division awards permits to newly-constructed buildings and monitors existing buildings inside the city.

The Planning Division is responsible for the development and oversight of Vernon’s General Plan, which establishes guiding principles for development inside the city. Planning division staff also prepare and review California Environmental Quality Act documents and process all zoning variances and conditional use permits.

The Water Division provides potable drinking water for the city at some of the lowest rates in region, maintaining a system of wells, reservoirs and piping systems. The division oversees the administration and maintenance of this system and the construction of new water service.
