The Building Division’s responsibilities include checking plans and inspecting structures in the city to ensure conformance with appropriate state and local codes, and issuing building permits. Each new tenant within the City is required to obtain a certificate of occupancy. As part of this process, the Building Division, in cooperation with the Health and Fire Departments, inspects buildings prior to occupancy to ensure that they are safe and in compliance with all codes. As part of its commitment to providing a business-friendly environment, the City offers a one-stop counter where questions regarding building codes, zoning requirements and public works are answered, which helps to streamline the permitting process.
