Vernon is one of only four cities in the state of California with its own health department, which is specifically focused on regulating the city’s industrial operations. Since Vernon maintains health authority within its jurisdiction, local businesses are able to deal directly with the City on environmental issues. Companies based in Vernon benefit from working directly with the city health department, which helps to streamline the monitoring and enforcement of health related federal, state and municipal laws, rules, ordinances and regulations.
Vernon is focused on protecting the environment, and passes strict ordinances governing the operations of the industrial businesses in areas including heavy manufacturers, food processors, garment manufacturers and hazardous waste storage and disposal. Recycling
Vernon’s city government is committed to recycling. The Vernon Health Department oversees the collection of California Redemptive Value (CRV) recyclable containers such as aluminum cans, glass and plastic bottles as well as other materials such as paper, cardboard and scrap metals. The City also hosts periodic e-waste recycling events, which allow local businesses and residents to drop off electronic items that cannot be disposed of as regular refuse, such computer monitors, televisions, dry cell batteries, fluorescent tubes and printer cartridges.
